2003 USTA SUPER NATIONAL
HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS
Girls 16s
Barnes Tennis Center - San Diego, California - August 2-10, 2003
There was only one upset today, but it was one to be remembered. In a three-hour marathon that included some of the longest, most incredible points I have ever seen, Laura Sadaka (pictured right) defeated third-seeded Sarah Fansler. The match between Lauren and Sarah was full of long points -- the average included a dozen passes over the net. Neither player would give up and that included arguments over calls. It was Lauren who just squeaked by in the end, 7-5,1-6,6-4. All of the other seeds moved on, though No. 9 Nina Munch-Soegaard was pushed to three sets by Catherine Duboc and Jennifer Stevens survived a scare from Megan Alexander, but pulled through 6-3,1-6,6-2. There were no doubles today as the players fought through two rounds of the feed-in consolation. Tomorrow will be a very full day as all three draws are in full swing. Marcia Frost
