Monday, August 4th

As play moved on to the second round there were some surprises in store as a couple of the seeds did not advance.

In the singles, the biggest upset was created by Claire Rietsch, who beat the No. 4 seeded Melissa Saiontz in two close (7-5,6-4) sets. Also not living up to her seeding was Chrissie Seredni. The tenth seed was overcome by Kyla Iwinski, 1-6,6-1,6-1. The only other upset in the singles draw was created by Laura Reichert as she eliminated the No. 13 seed, Lauren Lui, 3-6,6-1,6-3. Doubles play continued today with all of the top teams advancing.

Tomorrow the singles play moves into the third round and doubles will be put on hold as the consolation draw goes into full swing with two rounds being played. How the day ends is anyone's guess because the only thing that is predictable at the Barnes Tennis Center is the weather -- warm and dry.
