Bea Bielik (above) of Wake Forest won her second ITA Grand Slam tournament (her first was the 2000 Claycourts) with a 6-1,6-3 win over Lauren Kalvaria of Stanford. Though she lost in the singles final, Lauren won the doubles title at this event for the second year in a row. Last year she won with Laura Granville and this year she partnered with Gabriela Lastra for a 8-4 win over Bea and partner Janet Bergman. Minnesota's Harsh Mankad, who recently gained experience playing Davis Cup for India against Andy Roddick and James Blake, won the men's singles title. Unseeded Harsh defeated Baylor's Benjamin Becker (also unseeded) in a tough 6-7(5),6-0,7-6(2) match. The men's doubles went to San Diego's Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo, who topped Johan Brunstrom and Eric Cohn of SMU, 8-6. |
