2003 USTA NATIONAL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Atlantic Club - Manasquan, New Jersey - June 28-July 2, 2003
Monday, June 30th The boys main draw didn't have any surprises as top-seeded Dylan Arnold and second-seeded Nick Savage easily moved on, but No. 3 Michael Sroczynski didn't have it so easy as the seventh seed Trey Taylor pushed him to 7-6,7-5. Also struggling to advance was fifth-seeded Dennis Nevolo, who got past Cory Parr (No. 9), 7-6(3),3-6,6-1. There were a number of battles in the boys consolation draw including a volatile three-setter between Alex Vasin and Maksim Tikhomirov (Alex won) and a 7-6,7-5 match between Sean Corrigan and Richard Bonfiglio. Many of the girls consolations were just as exciting. Stephanie Kwok and Stephanie Cohen fought through three tough sets before the former prevailed. Lauren Holzberg couldn't have had a much closer win than the 6-3,6-7,6-4 over Alexandra Kaluza and the tenth-seeded Francine Whu overcame No. 6 Eleanor Peters,7-5,6-4. In the girls' main draw, the top-seeded Emmy Fritz-Krockow faced a challenge from No. 7 Blakely Ashley before she prevailed, 6-4,1-6,7-6. The second and third seeds, Kimberly Couts and Leigh Finnigan also faced three set matches. Only No. 5 Maggie Yahner was able to move on easily. The conditions improve dramatically as all of Wednesday's matches will be played at The Atlantic Club which includes a wonderful indoor viewing area which all of the parents and coaches (not to mention me!) appreciate through this heat wave as we roll into the semis.
