2004 USTA NATIONAL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Atlantic Club - Manasquan, New Jersey - July 3-7, 2004
Tuesday, July 6, 2004-Day Four One player stood out today as she defeated the top seed (twice) and took home her first trophy from the National Open Boys & Girls 16 Championships at the Atlantic Club. That player was Madison Brengle. Madison Brengle started the day by defeating No.1 Michaela Kissell in the singles semifinals, 6-2,6-1. She ended the day with another win over Michaela for the doubles title with partner Gail Brodsky. For Gail it was the positive part of the day, the negative being her loss to Katarina Reveche in the other singles semifinal, 6-2,6-4. The boys semifinals went off without any drama. The top two seeds, Cory Parr and Alex Vasin, moved into tomorrow's final without a hitch. Cory easily eliminated Christopher Racz, 6-1,6-2, while Alex had a slightly more difficult time with Waylon Chin before the 6-4,6-4 finish. The most interesting matches of the day were actually in the backdraw. The two that had me on the edge of my seat were between Ruxandra Dumitrescu and Francine Whu (Ruxandra edged by 6-2,4-6,6-4) and Stephanie Zilberman and Samantha Galainena (Samantha pulled it out 7-5,6-3). There is not doubt that the girls have provided the most excitement in this tournament, but with the finals coming tomorrow I expect that to change. Cory Parr and Alex Vasin have each dominated their side of the draw so it's anyone's guess who will win in that duo. Until Tomorrow,
