2004 USTA NATIONAL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Atlantic Club - Manasquan, New Jersey - July 3-7, 2004
Monday, July 5, 2004-Day Three Morning showers, afternoon thunder... The weather was the star of the day as it wrecked havoc with the match schedule, but the players made the best of it -- playing cards, watching tv and sweating off the high humidity. When play was under way today the matches held true to their seeding with only one real exception -- Gaily Brodsky's dominance of ninth-seeded Samantha Galainena. Despite a 6-0 loss in the first set, the unseeded New Yorker took her place in the semifinals after the next two sets. No. 3 seed Katarina Reveche, who eliminated tournament upsetter Lindsay Clark in straight sets, will face Gail in the morning. In the other semi, top-seeded Michaela Kissell, who had a much easier day today with a 6-2,6-3 win over Stacey Lee, will meet No. 10 Madison Brengle. Madison moved up after an exciting match with seventh-seeded Ruxandra Dumitrescu that was a lot closer than the 6-3,6-4 score expresses. The boys draw once again went off without any surprises, though the matches were closer today. Top-seeded Cory Parr faced a fight against No. 6 Christopher Lee. He will now face fourth-seeded Christopher Racz in the semis. (Christopher had a 6-4,6-1 win against No. 10 Jason Morgenstern. The bottom half of the boys singles draw presented more challenges today. No. 13 Waylon Chin and No. 11 Austin Longacre battled a three-setter before Waylon advanced. The second seed, Alex Vasin, had to earn his place in the semifinals through a long, three-set fight against No. 5 David Wolff. The weather pushed the doubles matches into the evening. The boys managed to finish up their draw with Luke Rassow-Kantor & Allen Tsang defeating Arsenio Culver & Julian Sulivan, 8-1, for the title. The girls doubles draw is further behind, with one quarterfinal match left to be played. Tuesday's forecast looks pretty clear and I look forward to the excitement of matches as we get closer to the end of the National Open at the Atlantic Club Until Tomorrow,
