2004 USTA NATIONAL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Atlantic Club - Manasquan, New Jersey - July 3-7, 2004
Saturday, July 3, 2004-First Day You couldn't ask for a better way to start a tournament. The sky was bright, the humidity was low and the excitement was high at the first day of the Boys & Girls 16 USTA National Open Championships at the Atlantic Club. Despite some problems at this event last year, there were very few complaints as 128 juniors and their families came to the Jersey shore for July 4th weekend. For the first day, players were split among three sites. I remained at the main Atlantic Club site to catch the girls in action. In contrast to the rest of the tournaments this year, there were no real upsets. Top-seeded Michaela Kissell survived a first round scare from Nadeja Demidenko, but she pulled it out 7-5,6-3 and had an easier time in her second-round. The second seed, Francine Whu, was victorious in both her matches in short sets. The only seeds to fall today in the girls draw were No. 14 Stephanie Zilberman, to Lindsay Clark, and the sixteenth-seeded Holly Huth who lost to Anita Bhamidipati. Both were straight set matches. Tomorrow the boys will be at the Atlantic Club and I will catch some of their matches. Their draw also moved through pretty smoothly the first day with all of the top seeds advancing, but you never know what day two will bring. Until Tomorrow,
Marcia Frost
