It was a long, rainy weekend, but the 3rd Annual USTA National Tennis Center Women's College Tennis Invitational turned out to be a great event for all. Tournament Director Bill Mountford managed to piece together courts from five area indoor locations to fill in during the hours the National Tennis Center was too rain-soaked to play at. Twenty of the country's top ranked teams competed through twelve draws in singles and doubles. No one seemed to mind the dreary sky or the construction around them as one of the first major events of the college season ended on Columbus Day. The rain definitely put a damper on the time I had allotted to cover the NTC Women's Invitational as the players scattered to different locations and I also had to spent the weekend running a tournament desk at the Port Washington Tennis Academy. I did manage to make it down for the final day to catch some of the action between raindrops. This event is a great display of top women's college tennis and I hope to have more time (and better weather) next year. Marcia Frost
