2003 NCAA DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIPS
In NCAA Division III, Mary Ellen Gordon was the name and Emory was the school for 2003. Mary Ellen completed the full sweep as she led her team to the title, captured the singles trophy and then took her THIRD (!) national doubles championship with teammate Jolyn Taylor. (It was Jolyn who she had faced in the finals of the singles.) On the men's side, the titles were just a bit more spread out. Emory won the team championship for the first time. The Eagles kept Williams College from a third consecutive win. Gustavus Adolphus seniors Kevin Whipple and Eric Butorac dominated the individual events. After their request to delay the singles final was denied, Kevin volunteered to default the final and make Eric the recorded champion. The two then teamed up to win the doubles. |
